The Chessmasterchess engine is called The King, written by Johan de Köning of the Netherlands. It was introduced in Chessmaster 4000; the first edition featured a chess engine written by David Kittinger, who went on to develop the engines for Interplay's USCF Chess, WChess for the German company Millennium 2000, and Sierra Entertainment's Power Chess, Majestic Chess and Disney's Aladdin Chess Adventures. According to the September 2009 Swedish Chess Computer Association (SSDF) rating list, Chessmaster 9000 had an estimated Elo rating of 2718 on an Athlon-1200 PC.^[7] If multiple versions of other engines are stripped out of this list, Chessmaster 9000 ranked 14th among all engines tested. As of May 2008, Chessmaster 9000 remained the most recent version rated by the SSDF.

The latest version, Chessmaster 11th Edition, was released in 2007, and has lagged behind more current chess engines. CCRL placed it 121st on its August 2020 list (15th among engines only available via purchase).^[8]

The King engine allows users to create new playing styles, called 'personalities', by manipulating several dozen different settings, such as King Safety, Pawn Weakness, Randomness, Mobility and others. Individual piece values can also be adjusted. Chessmaster 9000, for example, features over 150 different personalities ranging from International Grandmaster strength down to Stanley, a chimpanzee who, in most situations, plays completely random moves. The Stanley chimpanzee personality inspired the Stanley Random Chess Variant.^[9]

Chessmaster won the four-game match against Christiansen held in September 2002, by a score of 2½–1½.^[10] The Chessmaster program was operated by John Merlino, the Project Manager of Chessmaster at the time of the match. Four different personalities were used in the match, the first three of which were based on famous human Grandmasters: Alexander Alekhine, Bobby Fischer, and Mikhail Botvinnik. The final game of the match used the default 'Chessmaster' personality. Christiansen won the first game, lost the second and third games, and the fourth game resulted in a draw.

Ubisoft also offers a downloadable version of the game, Chessmaster Challenge, which differs from Chessmaster 10th Edition in its simplified interface and scaled-down tutorials.^[12]

The more recent editions of Chessmaster include both 2D and 3D designs, and a large number of different boards and themed chess piece designs. The interface was revised for Chessmaster 10th Edition and features animated 3D sets in which the pieces 'walk' between squares and have simulated battles when a piece is taken, reminiscent of Battle Chess or the Wizard's chess set from Harry Potter. Chessmaster version 10 is the 10th instalment of the chess playing game from Ubisoft.

Any game that makes it to a tenth version and beyond is sure to be a popular one – developers seldom spend time and money upgrading games that are not popular with their customers! Chessmaster is the most popular computerised chess game in history.

The rules of chess are well-known and the rules of the physical game apply in cyber-space too. A brief summary is as follows: the king is the most important piece and one of the weakest, able to move only one space at a time, albeit in any direction, the queen can also move in all directions but she can cover as many squares as there are in that direction. Bishops move diagonally, as far as possible, while castles (also known as rooks) move only in straight lines. Knights move in an L-shaped configuration and pawns can only move forwards, except when they take another piece which is done on a diagonal. Pawns can only move one space at a time except for their very first move which can be two spaces. Other moves like castling and more complicated gambits and plays have also been translated into the game’s programming for an authentic chess playing experience.

Players can choose from various ‘personalities’ against which to play, ranging from very skilled grand-masters to personalities that amount to little more than unskilled beginners, especially programming that makes random moves. These various personalities enable players to match their own skill sets to those of the computer player, giving them a challenging game with a good chance of winning. Players can manipulate the personalities, weighting them towards stronger pawn attacks, greater or lesser mobility and a host of other features in order to strengthen their own game and work on known weaknesses.

While chess fiends are not particularly fussy about what the chess pieces look like – the moves and winning the game being all important – no player can fail to be charmed by the solid-looking virtual pieces provided by the game. The controls are easy to use and players will quickly learn to move the pieces as effortlessly as in the physical game. As a special feature, players of the 10th edition can even play using the wizard’s chess set, featuring the chess pieces made famous in J K Rowling’s Harry Potter book series.
